John Detrick is a native Californian and dedicated family man, He is constantly inspired by his environment. John enjoys carrying a small sketch pad around, wherever he goes to draw as he waits in lines, whether to have a tire changed or at the dentist’s office.
In this age of i-phones, John does not hesitate to use his camera to record ideas, thoughts, and feelings. He is an avid reader, who looks for ideas that spark from his readings.
John stays fit through daily neighborhood walks, and sometimes exercises at the local gym in a spinning class in addition to weekly games of beach volleyball with friends in Newport Beach, California. He is fascinated that he wakes up still remembering his own dreams, which are long and so mixed with old and new experiences, that even these inspire new painting ideas. Mostly John enjoys painting because of its own pleasant creative challenge.
John Detrick was born and raised in Pacific Palisades, California. He studied architecture and design at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. He became an architect, and practiced for 39 years, in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.
